What do I need to do immediately when I arrive in Upper Austria?
First, you register with the municipality, set up a bank account, and check your health insurance. After that, everyday life quickly becomes easier.
How do I find an apartment or a room?
The best way to start is through local platforms, student/skilled worker networks, or dormitories. Pay attention to the rental agreement, deposit, and usual ancillary costs.
Approximately how high are the living costs?
You can expect moderate costs: rent, groceries, public transport, and leisure activities are easy to plan. Prices differ between urban and rural areas.
Where can I get support if I’m new to Upper Austria?
You can contact regional counseling centers that support international skilled workers and students – for example, with administrative procedures, housing, or integration.
What rules apply to working in Austria?
You should ensure you have a valid employment contract, work permit, and understand the tax framework. You should also have your qualifications recognized, if necessary.
Do I absolutely need German language skills?
You’ll get by much more easily in everyday life if you speak a little German. There are many course offerings – often specifically for international newcomers.

You’ll realize it at the latest when you want to go shopping full of motivation on a Sunday: shops are closed. Really closed. Always. But on Saturday, there’s an extra lively shopping atmosphere – everyone stocks up as if a three-day snowstorm is coming.

You need to ensure you have a valid residence and/or work permit, register for tax purposes, and take out all relevant insurance policies. This will prepare you well for a long-term stay.
